Septic tips for homeowners

Septic questions, answered

How do I know something is wrong with my septic system?

The EPA lists these signs:

  • Sewage or water backing up into the house
  • Slow drains and gurgling pipes
  • Damp spots or standing water near the tank or drain field
  • A sewage smell
  • Unusually green grass over the drain field

Any of them is worth a call.

Sewage is backing up. What do I do first?
  1. Keep people and pets away from it.
  2. Wear rubber gloves for any cleanup.
  3. Call 864-680-2692. We take emergency septic calls 24/7.

Sewage can carry harmful germs.

How much does septic work cost?
Septic inspection from $499
Septic inspection prices
Residential, no pump$499
Residential, with a pump$699
Commercial$699

Everything else is quoted in writing before work starts. What moves the price:

  • How easy the tank is to reach
  • How much is damaged
  • The soil
  • Whether a permit is needed

The written contract sets the price. If we run into something no one could see beforehand, like rock or the water table, we stop and go over it with you before any added cost.

How often should I pump and inspect my septic tank?
  • Pump: most household tanks need it every 3 to 5 years.
  • Inspect: SC DES says every 1 to 2 years, and every year if the system has pumps or other moving parts.

Tank size, household size, water use and a garbage disposal change where you land.

Can I use a septic additive instead of pumping?

No. SC DES says additives are not necessary and some may be harmful, and they do not replace regular pumping.

What is a certified septic report?

A written report on your existing septic system, signed by us under our license. It says what we found and what the system needs, and we use it for repairs, drain field extensions and permits.

How and when do I pay?

Homeowners pay when the job is done. Commercial accounts can ask about terms.

Do you serve my town?
